“Azraq” is the Arabic word for the color
blue. Blue (along with red) is seen in international relations and
humanitarian relief as a color signifying neutrality or aid and is used
by multiple international organizations as a witness to the cooperative
and/or humanitarian spirit of their mission including the UN and its
subsidiary bodies, EU, NATO, and Human Rights Watch among many other
Non-Governmental Organizations. Blue and turquoise are also regarded in
mid-eastern cultures as having properties which ward off harm and envy.
