Algerian government accepts help in finding missing citizens.

The nineties were a time of great unrest and civil war in Algeria with armed religious rebel groups and the national army fighting each other. Amid the fighting thousands of citizens disappeared. The Algerian government now recognizes the importance in accepting outside assistance in locating the missing.

Families and relatives of the 6146 missing individuals protested recently to mark the seventh anniversary of the treaty which ended the violence. The protest was also held to memorialize the missing and demand government recognition that thousands are still unaccounted for and it has not done enough to address the issue.

The protest comes days after the government solicited help from the UN Working Group on Enforced/Involuntary Disappearances to resolve this matter.

Some hopeful news from the North African Arab region.
