The Ministry of The Interior declared a state of emergency and banned public gatherings today (Friday, September 21st) to protect the “safety of citizens and general security” due to calls on social networks for acts of violent protest to occur on this day.
The calls for violence come in response to new cartoons published in a French magazine (Charlie Hebdo) which depict the likeness of Prophet Muhammed. The cartoons and subsequent protests come at an already unstable time in the Middle East with the infamous Youtube trailer of the film allegedly depicting Prophet Muhammed in a less than favorable light.
When should a government curb free speech?
