Rise in number of Iraqi refugees suffering from trauma


Egyptian doctors who work with Iraqi refugees say that an increasing number of these refugees are suffering from psychological shock and other diseases.


Ahlam Tawbiya, a doctor who treats refugees in Egypt says that many suffer from intense psychological conditions and illnesses, the number of refugees cited between 7o,ooo and 15o,ooo. They are also suffering from other diseases such as heart disease.
Abeer Atifa, a spokeswoman for the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, said that most of the refugees are suffering from these conditions because of their circumstances: receiving bad news from home about new developments, a downturn in their economic situation, or anxiety about not having work opportunities.
